For the 3rd Annual SummerDaze Music Festival on Sunday, it will be rad to again see the orbits of so many astounding local musicians collide. The showcase begins at noon on the Salida SteamPlant Plaza and will expand the diversity of musical collaboration seen in previous years. Organizer Chris Nasca curates a display that will put younger voices, like Briony Kennington Hunn – the pixie with a voice made of whipped cream frosting– next to stalwart get up and jam crews like Blue Recluse and The Groove Farmers. Like a hippie pool shark, Nasca has mastered the game of taking diverse and colorful local talent, racking them together tightly on the stage and then cueing up a load of fun.
New to the festival will be Random Shuffle, a group that has earned increasing exposure over the last year by honing their kids-of-summer, rock-steady groove. This year the band will hit the main stage after recent and impressive performances at Salida’s Victoria Tavern and Boathouse Cantina; clubs in Pueblo, Alamosa and Saguache; and even a two-day stand at Bob Marley’s Birthday Bash at Herman’s Hideaway in Denver.
Returning from previous years are what could be considered the super-groups of Salida artists – Blue Recluse, Roundhouse Assembly, The Velvet Riff, Yogi Stew, The Groove Farmers, Big Meadow and Mo’Champipple and the Miso Horns. All have a rich, shared history. With each unique conglomeration of guitar, bass, drums, keys, horns, mandolin, fiddle and vocal styles, Salida’s best will jam folk to funk, rock to reggae. Old friends Yogi Miller and Stew Pappenfort form the buddy band Yogi Stew. Pappenfort will show up in Mo’Champipple with friend Ernie Hatfield, who also plays keys for Blue Recluse. Drummer George Mossman regularly lends a hand in at least three of the performing bands.
SummerDaze provides a solid look at what sets Salida apart musically. Guitarist Greg Walter says of one of these mash-up bands, “Velvet Riff is a combination of two Salida bands, The Riff and WanderLust Road, featuring an awesome rhythm section, lead guitar (the Riff) and original compositions with guitar and vocals (WanderLust Road). At SummerDaze, we will be laying down some classic R&B and funk tunes, and we are really looking forward to it.”
