APRIL CREATIVE MIXER THIS THURSDAY!
The Salida Council for the Arts invites anyone interested in art or practicing the art of creative living to attend the April Creative Mixer at the Salida SteamPlant Paquette Gallery on Thursday, April 12 from 5:30-7 p.m. featuring artist Sally Mather and musician Hank Martin. The Creative Mixer is free, open to the public and is a casual, social gathering to share information about the local arts scene.
Featured Artist Sally Mather spent her professional life as a nurse-midwife providing women’s health care. Through the years, she explored many different creative mediums – clay, printmaking, oils, acrylics and watercolors – on her own as well as participating in various workshops and classes. In 1998, her mom gave her a set of “garage sale” soft pastels. The vibrancy, kinesthetic aspect, and immediacy of the medium became love at first touch. A year later, Sally moved to Salida. Surrounded by mountains in the beautiful Arkansas River Valley and with her love of the outdoors it was a natural evolution to begin painting “en plein air”. Sally has been actively volunteering at Ark-Valley Humane Society for the past 7 years. Fifty percent of the sale of her original landscape paintings in this show will benefit the shelter.
Featured Musician Hank Martin grew up fourth of nine children in a farm family in Western Nebraska. The family eventually went into the restaurant and lounge business. Early on, music, dancing, and humor were a big part of the family upbringing. At 13, Hank picked up his older brother’s guitar. He had no formal training in music theory, but found he had talent for creating and writing songs on stringed instruments. Hank formed and played in area bands and later became a solo act.
Hank earned degrees from Chadron State College and then lived on the Front Range of Colorado for over 30 years. Salida came calling on Halloween of 2016. Hank now lives her and is a social worker for Chaffee County. Seeing that Salida/Buena Vista has an outstanding music scene, he decided to dust off his guitar and start playing again. The Creative Mixer will be his first gig back as a singer and guitar player.
