First Ark Valley Pride parade and celebration in Salida
“Gay pride or LGBT pride is the positive stance against discrimination and violence toward lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people to promote their self-affirmation, dignity, equal rights, increase their visibility as a social group, build community, and celebrate sexual diversity and gender variance. Pride, as opposed to shame and social stigma, is the predominant outlook that bolsters most LGBT rights movements throughout the world” (Partnership for Community Action).
The Partnership for Community Action will host Salida’s 2017 Ark Valley Pride Celebration from noon until 4 p.m. Saturday, June 3, with a parade followed by a picnic in Riverside Park and an after party from 8 p.m. until midnight at Wood’s High Mountain Distillery, 144 W. First St.
DJ Magee and GP3 Super Sport will provide music for the event, which will feature friendly community competitions, a Community Art Tent sponsored by MAI Acupuncture Clinic and Boys & Girls Club of Chaffee County and face painting by the Salida Creativity Lab.
GP3 Supersport is a homegrown Salida band that just completed a new album, Love Built to Last. Greg Panos III (GP3) writes songs influenced by the lyrical tradition of exploring the beauty of human bonds, passions and stories. Panos’ belief is love as the pervasive force that forms the glue of humanity imbues his work with positivity.
The day begins with a Pride Parade headed up by Shelley Schreiner. “It is going to be a people-powered parade – no motorized vehicles – but all bikes, skateboards, wheelchairs, etc., are welcome. We’re also asking that folks wear purple (on the rainbow flag, it represents harmony) and generally just be fabulous,” says Mark Monroe of Sellars Project Space.
Complimentary lunches from Smoking Bones Catering will be served, but attendees are encouraged to bring drinks, chips, dips and other packaged items to share with the rest of the community. Monroe and Jimmy Sellars have been planning the event for over a year, and support has poured in from the entire Ark Valley and beyond to the Front Range.
