Bluegrass meets jazz this weekend in the Upper Arkansas River Valley when two of the world’s greatest acoustic guitarists perform live Friday, March 10, at the historic Coaldale Schoolhouse. New York City musicians Grant Gordy and Ross Martin will cover traditional jazz tunes in a contemporary fashion. Show producer and local musician Bruce Hayes described Gordy and Martin’s show as “sweet listening music where they’ll likely get down and riff with a little bluegrass picking too.”
Often portrayed as flat-picking virtuosos, Gordy is a veteran of the David Grisman Quintet and Martin is widely known for his work in the Matt Flinner Trio and the Jeff Austin Band. Gordy and Martin’s latest album, Year of the Dog, features cover songs as well as original work, and Hayes said it is “one of the most gorgeous acoustic albums I’ve ever heard.”
Hayes invited the duo to perform at the schoolhouse when they reached out to him looking for a Colorado venue. Because of the rich sounds offered by the room’s acoustics and old wood combined with the intimacy of the space, Hayes said Gordy and Martin will “sound beautiful there.”
Before the show, Gordy and Martin are offering a guitar workshop geared toward the skill level of the attendees. The 90-minute workshop begins at 4 p.m. and costs $30. Advance registration is requested, and a minimum number of participants is required in order to hold the class.
There are no plans in the works for Hayes to play onstage with Gordy and Martin, but he is open to the possibility. “I think it will be a monumental concert with the highest quality of pickers we’ve had in Coaldale, if not anywhere in the state,” Hayes added. “This is an amazing opportunity to have musicians of this caliber come to our little area. I encourage people to take advantage of it.”
The show begins at 7 p.m. at the Coaldale Schoolhouse, 287 Hayden Creek Rd., and tickets are just $15 at the door. Both events are BYOB, and outside food is welcome. Some complimentary snacks will be provided.
