BV event features 28 local artists
For 32 years the Chaffee Council on the Arts has sponsored an open awards show. This year is no different. Local artists will be honored and recognized at the annual event, Sept. 1-3, in the Pinon Room at the Buena Vista Community Center.
More than 15 Buena Vista business owners will support this year’s Chaffee Arts Open Award Show. An opening reception will take place Friday night from 6-8 p.m. The show continues on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The awards show is a free event and open to the public.
Denise Mullen, Chaffee Arts secretary and treasurer – and one of numerous volunteer members of the council organizing the event – indicated that at least 28 local artists would be featured in the juried show.
Lana Woodruff, a retired teacher, artist and gallery owner from Beulah, Colo., will judge all work from the artists. A member of the council recommended Woodruff as a judge because she will judge all work from the artists. A member of the council recommended Woodruff as a judge because she has adjudicated similar types of events in the past; $1,500 in prizes will be awarded at the arts show.
Mullen explained that four artistic categories will be represented at the show: the first category is two-dimensional art and includes oil, acrylics, pastel, watercolor and printmaking; a second category reflects photographic and graphic arts; the third category is three-dimensional art, including clay, metal, glass, mixed media, wood, jewelry and collage; and the final category honors fiber arts such as quilting, felt and woven clothing.
Musicians providing live music for Friday night’s reception will be announced at a later date or at the event; hors d’oeuvres and wine will also be available during the reception.
The mission of Chaffee County Council on the Arts is to provide opportunities for artists to learn, show and sell their work, and add to the artistic and economic vitality of our community while promoting the arts in Buena Vista.
Council members will be accepting donations toward supporting the arts in Buena Vista throughout the show, or on an ongoing basis via mail to P.O. Box 1154, Buena Vista, CO, 81211. The council currently has 35 participants and is always accepting additional members.
