Combining two defining features of Salida – bicycles and history – Absolute Bikes Adventures and Greater Arkansas River Nature Association are hosting a Salida Historical Town Tour at 1 p.m. April 23.
The bike tour will start at Absolute Bikes and work its way through the downtown, visiting spots that highlight the historical architecture. Local history buffs Jack Chivvis, John McCarthy, Bob Campbell and Larry Kovacic will share history as well as tales of gunfights and ghosts.
Chivvis said the Chaffee County Courthouse is a “good example” of art deco, of which Salida is in short supply. He also said the tour will likely include a bit of G Street to see some of the “nice Victorian houses.”
Also included on the tour will be the old hospital, now the city and county building, he said.
The bike tour will end at the Salida Museum, where Bob Campbell, vice president of the Salida Museum Association, will provide information on the museum.
“My forte is the museum. I always say that,” Campbell said. “I like it, I know it and I can show the better points of the museum – and the historic things are just incredible.”
On the tour, people will “get to see the history firsthand. And they’ll be able to enjoy the town, being outdoors and riding their bikes and seeing the history of Salida.”
Kimberly Kerschke, Absolute Bikes Adventures manager and GARNA volunteer for the program planning committee, said they have already had about 30 people sign up for the tour, so it will likely be split into at least two groups.
If in need of a bike to participate in the tour, contact Absolute Bikes. The bike rental fee is not included in the fee for the tour.
Kerschke said while ABA already has a guided town tour, she wanted to offer a public program that unites GARNA with bike riding.
The bike tour is designed to be easy and for all ages, she said.
The cost of the tour is $15 for GARNA members, $20 for non-members. Price includes the two-hour historical town tour, entry into the Salida Museum and a Salida trails map courtesy of Absolute Bikes.
